James Harder For Blacksburg Town Council
Hi, I’m James Harder, and I’m running for Blacksburg Town Council because our town deserves leadership that prioritizes families, businesses, and smart growth.
Blacksburg is thriving, but we need to ensure that growth benefits everyone. I believe government can be a force for good—strengthening our economy, supporting local families, protecting our environment, and fostering a vibrant community life.

My Priorities
Growing Our Economy
Blacksburg’s economy should work for everyone. I’ll support small businesses, nurture startups, and promote policies that create good-paying jobs.
Supporting Families
Housing is too expensive, and public transportation needs improvement. I’ll push for practical solutions to the housing crisis and advocate for walkable, family-friendly neighborhoods with excellent schools.
Protecting Our Environment
Blacksburg’s natural beauty is one of its greatest assets. I’ll champion green spaces and sustainability initiatives that keep our town clean, healthy, and resilient.
Investing in Community Life
A strong town invests in arts, culture, and recreation. I’ll support public spaces, arts programs, and community initiatives that make Blacksburg a great place to live, work, and play.
About Me
I’m a fifth-generation Montgomery County native, a Virginia Tech graduate and employee, and a longtime public servant. My passion for service started early—my grandmother served in the House of Delegates, and I learned from her the importance of responsive leadership.
I’ve worked for U.S. Representative Rick Boucher, led major initiatives at Virginia Tech, and helped drive economic development through grants and startup programs. I ran one of the closest Delegate races in Virginia history, which led to appointments on Governor McAuliffe’s Transition Team and the Virginia Board of Forestry.
Over the last five years, I managed economic development grants in Virginia Tech’s Department of Computer Science and directed cs/root, an entrepreneurship hub supporting startups in the New River and Roanoke Valleys. I also teach public policy at Virginia Tech.
When I’m not working, you’ll find me with my two kids, my cat, and my dog—or playing music, golfing, and training for sprint triathlons.
Let’s build a stronger Blacksburg together. I’d love your support.
